Make your job as a laborer a career.

The guiding principle of the Laborers Union is to collectively negotiate for better wages, benefits, and better working conditions through a legal and binding contract and then enforce that contract representing you with your employer. By joining together in a Union, you and your co-workers have the collective strength to make sure you receive good contracts and fair treatment on the job. Unions are built on the same ideals that have made this country GREAT! Including the right to stand up and speak out to improve our lives and gain a rightful share of the American dream.

Workplace security, career opportunities, and training options in a union… are they better?

The short answer is yes. In a union, you are in control of your career, your future, and your legacy. Your job could be your career as a union laborer. The Laborers’ union of Missouri and Kansas has contracts with over 800 different contractors in a variety of industries. When you are a union laborer you are part of something bigger than just working for one company.

Our training school provides 10 unique training tracks for our laborers. This is a great way to expand and improve your skills which opens the door to many career opportunities for work all year round. We provide training in general construction, highway construction, flatwork concrete, masonry, sewer/water, excavation grading, environmental, cured-in-place concrete, pipe, demolition, and tunneling. These trainings are offered free of charge for our members. Learn more about our training centers in High Hill by clicking here and Belton, Missouri by clicking here.

When you are a member of the laborers’ union, you also have workplace security. You have strength in numbers when negotiating with employers. You no longer will have to work just enough to not get unemployment but you will be able to expand and work in areas that interest you. Also, you are not dependent on one company for work. When you are a union laborer you can choose whether you want to work locally or travel (and you will get paid for your travel).

Does the union offer better and consistent wages?

Simply put… Union workers make more. A union laborer makes between $42.43 – $53.97 an hour depending on the project, skill, and location. This is a total package including healthcare and retirement benefits Union workers negotiate together for their wages and thus are set by a legal contract. A company can not decrease wages arbitrarily.

What does a Union offer for healthcare?

The union laborers’ health and welfare fund coverage is one of the best you can get for your work as a construction craft laborer. The current deductible at Emery Sapp and Sons is from $1,500 to $2,800 for an individual and $4,500 to $5,600 for a family. The deductive for union laborers is $400 for individuals and $800 for families. That can save families up to $4,800 a year! The out-of-pocket maximum under the ESS plan for an individual is $6,500 and $13,500 for a family. While a union laborer’s out-of-pocket is $3,000 – $4,000 for an individual and $5,000 for a family. Union benefits can vary by local and our team would be happy to navigate the process and answer any questions you may have. But these union benefits are better for you and your family.

Your health benefits as a union laborer do not come out of your paycheck’s wages. Dental, vision, and mental health insurance are COVERED in your health and welfare plan at no additional cost.

How much does your ESS health, dental, and vision insurance cost to cover you, your spouse, and your family?

Why is a union retirement and pension plan better for you?

Union laborers have a guaranteed retirement plan. The defined benefit plan guarantees you a monthly check for the rest of your life. Your retirement plan is pooled with all the laborers of your region and is not reliant on one company’s success or failures.
